  1. The parrot was the main attraction, we often walked down from Norton to see the parrot in Smith’s petshop. I suspect the family was connected with the surplus stores at Thornaby, and a farm on Blakeston lane where WW2 aircraft parts were said to be stored, and the great (tortoise) escape occurred!

  2. Didn’t W M Martin also have premises on Norton Road, going up the bank from Tilery (Hills factory) towards the High Street on the right. I seem to remember going there with my Grandfather. Also, there was a pet shop opposite on the left that always had a Parrot in a cage outside that talked!
