What I find interesting in this photo is the Co-Op Coal yard on the left with the coal stacked high waiting to be bagged, the Co-op coal offices were around the corner, the Parade has just passed George Street, and is either making for St Paul Church for a service, Revd Gunnion Vicar, or going a mile further to the RAF base we called the Aerodrome.


  2. Following the Army cadets are Thornaby’s No 1261 Squadron, Air Training Corps. We were both headquartered in the old barrack block at RAF Thornaby, appropriately with the Army cadets on the ground floor and the ATC up above. The old barrack block is still there and I believe the Army are still in occupation? 1261 Squadron is unfortunately, long gone.
