  1. This was one of the first school visits after the war so many foods were still rationed and we were asked to take tea and coffee as gifts for our hosts. I don’t think many of us enjoyed our first experience of French food, but we all enjoyed the excitement of visiting all the famous sights of Paris. We climbed to the top of the Arc de Triomphe saw the painting of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, climbed the steps of the Sacre Coeur – we even went to the Opera and had the added bonus of seeing Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip on the Champs Elysess on their official visit. I believe our teachers thought the trip would improve our French conversational skills but I hate to admit French Oral was the only exam I failed!
